Charleston: A Southern Escape of Luxury, History, and Timeless Charm

Some places are worth returning to—and Charleston is absolutely one of them. This was my second visit to this beloved Southern city, and somehow it felt even more magical than the first. I was honored to attend the Travel Academy representing Travels with Tesa, invited by the Travel + Leisure Board and Explore Charleston to experience the very best of Charleston through luxury accommodations, historic landmarks, curated activities, exceptional dining, and true Southern hospitality.

Waterfront Luxury at The Cooper

My stay at The Cooper introduced Charleston’s newest level of luxury. This five-star waterfront hotel pairs refined interiors with sweeping harbor views. Highlights included the heated infinity pool, state-of-the-art fitness center, serene spa, and excellent dining. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to extend your stay.

Crabbing with Tia Clark

For an authentic local experience, I joined Tia Clark for a crabbing adventure through Charleston’s marshlands. It was fun, educational, and one of the most memorable moments of the trip. Best of all—I caught the biggest blue crab of the day.

Courtyard dining at 82 Queen

Dinner at 82 Queen felt like classic Charleston. Set in a charming courtyard, this longtime favorite is beloved for warm hospitality and Lowcountry cuisine. Romantic and timeless, it captures the spirit of the city beautifully.

Walking Through History with John LaVerne

A private historical tour with John LaVerne offered deeper insight into Charleston’s layered past. From cobblestone streets and pastel homes to church steeples and hidden alleyways, the city feels like a living museum. John brought its stories to life with warmth and expertise.

Elevated Lunch at High Cotton

A Charleston institution, it’s popular for polished Southern cuisine, lively atmosphere, and its stylish setting in the heart of the Historic District. It’s where classic Lowcountry flavors meet modern elegance. Make sure you try theShe-Crab soup - it is famous for good reason.

Casual Lunch at Oyster House

Popular with locals and visitors alike, it’s known for fresh seafood, lively energy, and an easygoing atmosphere. The perfect casual spot for , hush puppies, oysters, and soft shell crabs - an authentic taste of Charleston.

Stroll through American Gardens

A visit to American Gardens is a must for a peaceful respite from the bustle of downtown. Designed by celebrated landscape architect Loutrel Briggs, this hidden gem reflects Charleston’s tradition of elegant public gardens. With fountains, manicured paths, and lush blooms, it offers a serene glimpse into the city’s timeless charm.

A Grand Stay at Wentworth Mansion

No Charleston visit is complete without experiencing one of its grand historic stays, and Wentworth Mansion remains one of the finest. This beautifully restored mansion is beloved for timeless architecture, intimate luxury, and impeccable service. Staying here feels like stepping into Charleston’s elegant past.

Dinner at Circa 1886

Dinner at Circa 1886 was a culinary highlight. Located in the former carriage house of Wentworth Mansion, the restaurant is celebrated for Chef Marc Collins modern take on Southern cuisine. Refined, creative, and deeply rooted in local flavors.

International African American Museum

A visit to the International African American Museum was both powerful and essential. Designed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, the striking elevated structure honors the sacred ground of Gadsden’s Wharf below, where many enslaved Africans first arrived in America. It is one of the most significant cultural institutions in the country.
